Does the basement switchgear room in a high-rise building require a gas fire suppression system?

Yes. According to Article 7.6.7 of the “Fire Protection Code for High-Rise Civil Buildings” GB50045-95 (2005 edition), the following rooms in high-rise buildings shall be equipped with gas fire-extinguishing systems: 7.6.7.6 Other specially important equipment rooms. Here, “other specially important equipment rooms” refer to spaces whose fires would severely impact production and daily life; equipment rooms fall under this category. This is explicitly stipulated in Item 5 of Document No. [2007]226 issued by the Public Security Fire Department. Please refer to my attachment. Among gas fire-extinguishing systems, heptafluoropropane is relatively well-established. In general, when the protected area is small (less than 500 square meters and with a volume not exceeding 1,600 cubic meters), a prefabricated fire-extinguishing system can be used. All that’s required is to place several gas storage cylinders within the protected room and meet certain specified requirements—this approach is relatively straightforward for designers (eliminating the need to install a piping network).
Here, it’s important to note that in addition to the underground switchgear room serving this building, which must be equipped with gas fire suppression systems, the community switchgear room—serving the entire single-building complex—should also be equipped with such systems.
